Congressman Bill Emerson is skeptical as to whether a $76 billion federal deficit reduction pact will achieve "real" budget savings; White House and congressional officials hammered out the plan for a two-year package of reduction late last week after 20 days of closed-door bargaining.
The recently renovated Civic Center building, 232 Broadway, is dedicated; about 50 people attend the ceremony and open house; the building, which formerly was a car dealership, has been the home of the Civic Center since 1981.
Two sections of Interstate 55 near Cape Girardeau are expected to be opened to traffic some time next month; they will be the first sections of the super-highway to be put in use in Missouri; the portions of highway slated for first use are the six miles from Fruitland to Wedekind Park and from Scott City to the Highway 74 intersection, a distance of 2 1/2 miles.
Clarence Lee Shirrell has been elected president of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce for the 1963 calendar year.
The Rev. Roland G. Riechmann, pastor of First English Lutheran Church, has accepted a call to the pastorate of Zion Lutheran Church at Mount Carmel, Ill.; he will begin his new work there Jan. 1; Riechmann came to Cape Girardeau in May 1935, and since that time the congregation has acquired its building at 27 N. Park Ave.
The annual Memorial Sunday is held at Christ Evangelical Church, marking the close of the church year; names of the deceased for the year are read and a sermon is preached by the pastor, the Rev. Ralph E. Weisser.
ST. LOUIS -- Aviator Tony Jannus has a narrow escape, when his hydroplane hits an obstruction on the river bank here as it is landing; the machine flips over and catches fire; the Benoist Aviation Co. sends for another machine at once, so that Jannus may continue his flights and fill his date Saturday at Cape Girardeau.
Wilbur Bowman, who has been selling books for the past few months, has quit that job and is now working for the Stehr Mercantile Co.
