Bill Maskill is out and John Mumford is in as head football coach at Southeast Missouri State University; Southeast athletic director Dr. Richard McDuffie announces at a news conference at the Show Me Center that Maskill has resigned to pursue other coaching possibilities; Mumford has served as Southeast's defensive coordinator the past season.

Emmett R."Abe" Stuber, one of the most successful coaches in the history of Southeast Missouri State University athletics, dies early in the morning at his home here; he was 86; during his tenure at Southeast from 1932 to 1946, Stuber's teams won 17 Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles in football, track and basketball.

1964

Members of the recently appointed committee on developing Trail of Tears State Park has asked the County Court for authority to investigate other recreational possibilities within the county; the men also asked that the name of the committee be changed to "Cape County Park Board."

Agreement has been reached between State College and the representatives of the Kelso estate for the purchase by the college of extensive holdings in the North Henderson Avenue vicinity; the property will provide from 15 to 18 building lots for the college.

CAMP SAM A. BAKER, Mo. -- Members of the 140th Infantry of the Missouri National Guard, having put up with a full weekend of dull weather, finally enjoy a pleasant day in this winter camp; excellent meals and warm tents, however, have staved off the military blues, and the men are liking the drills and all that goes with them.

Five tons of earth will be dumped on the stage of the Broadway Theater tomorrow to form the yard and the roadway that figure in the setting of "Tobacco Road," Jack Kirkland's history-making drama that John Barton and his associate actors will present.

1914

A week after the rumor was reported in the pages of The Daily Republican, Fred Groves confirms he has been selected as the new agent for the Ford automobile in this district.

A fire broke out in the H.A. Nussbaum store on Good Hope Street last night, which for a while threatened to destroy the entire stock of goods as well as the building; a heroic fight by Joe Haas, Ben Haman and several other Haarig people, however, held the flames down until the city firemen arrived to douse the blaze.
