Wendy Rust of Cape Girardeau has been named Missouri's Mother of the Year for 1989; she was nominated for the honor by two local organizations, the PEO Chapter GF and the Southeast Missouri Council on the Arts.
Vaccine to immunize 40,000 people arrived yesterday by air at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport; the vaccine, valued at 25 cents per dose, will be administered to the public Sunday at feeding stations at May Greene, Washington, Lorimier, Franklin, Alma Schrader, Jefferson, Nell Holcomb, Central High, St. Vincent and St. Mary schools, Academic Hall, the Arena Building and the Smelterville Civic Center.
As a result of the large participation of area artists in the 17th annual Missourian Art Exhibition this weekend, the committee in charge is frustrated with the problem of where to hang them; this year's show has a record 180 paintings.
Dedication of the new addition to Grace Methodist Episcopal Church has been set for Jan. 22; most of the brick work on the new, two-story addition, to be used as Sunday school quarters and as headquarters for the various congregational organizations, has been completed.
A record attendance of 619 people is recorded at First Baptist Church's Sunday school, this being an all-time high mark for the congregation.
Despite reports from earlier this week, officials with the Frisco Railroad have flatly refused to accept the amendment to the original franchise ordinance, which had received the nod of the Cape Girardeau City Council on Monday night; at that time it was reported Frisco would accept the altered riverfront beautification plans, if it was given two years to do the work; city leaders will go to St. Louis on Friday to discuss the franchise with Frisco officials.
The Jackson City Council has accepted the resignation of F.A. Obermiller as street commissioner and appointed Louis Bingenheimer in his place.
