25 years ago: Nov. 18, 1984

Members of the Second Missionary Baptist Church observe the fifth anniversary of the pastorate of the Rev. Claude Russell; guest speaker at the worship service is the Rev. Pythias Frazier, pastor of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Carbondale, Ill.

A new building has been constructed in the 2100 block of William Street; it will house BG's Part II, a new seafood and steakhouse restaurant; owner Garry Hellwege plans to open the new restaurant, across the street from the original BG's Olde Tyme Deli & Saloon, soon.

50 years ago: Nov. 18, 1959

Tentative plans for an interdenominational religious center at State College, with proceeds from the approaching Black Hills Passion Play to be the start of a fund for the project, are announced by president Mark F. Scully.

F.W. Woolworth Co. and the W.T. Grant Co., a department store, have signed leases and will occupy substantial square footage in the Town Plaza Shopping Center soon to be constructed on William Street, says Sen. A.M. Spradling Jr., one of its developers.

75 years ago: Nov. 18, 1934

A joint demonstration by the State College band and the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps will be given at halftime of the college's game with the Kirksville, Mo., team next Friday at Houck Field Stadium; that game will decide the MIAA championship; the Cape Girardeau team is unbeaten in eight games this season.

Evangelical services for the Salvation Army begin in the evening at the barracks, 207 Broadway, under the direction of Adjutant Ernest R. Orchard of Rock Island, Ill., father of Capt. E.R. Orchard, the local corps officer; evening services will resume tomorrow.

100 years ago: Nov. 18, 1909

The rehabilitation of the roadbed of the Chester, Perryville & Ste. Genevieve Railroad, one of the roads in the Houck system, is ordered by the railroad commissioners of Missouri; the improvements consist of 2,000 new ties on each mile of the road's tracks; these must be placed within 60 days; the road runs from Chester, Ill., to the Thebes, Ill., bridge.

Granite blocks are being hauled from the Houck railroad freight yards for the paving of Broadway hill.
