25 years ago: Nov. 18, 1982

Good news and bad news came out of yesterday's meeting between the Cape Girardeau Multipurpose Building Committee and a team of consultants; the good news is that the arena project is feasible; the bad news is that, based on a $12 million projected budget, the proposed building would have to have between 1,500 and 2,000 fewer permanent seats that the committee wanted.

After a 23-week theater run, E.T. has "gone home"; this evening's showing is the last of the blockbuster film "E.T. -- The Extra-Terrestrial" at the Town Plaza Cinema.

50 years ago: Nov. 18, 1957

The Missourian's 11th annual Art Exhibition Saturday night and Sunday drew perhaps the largest crowd and was acclaimed by many as the finest of the series; as was expected, guest artist Frank B. Nuderscher of St. Louis was "a hit" with everyone.

Rainfall of Sunday, plus much more on Sunday night and today poses at least a temporary threat for much of Southeast Missouri; in five cases -- Parma, Deering, Portageville, Arbyrd and Bragg City -- schools have been closed until the water recedes.

75 years ago: Nov. 18, 1932

Two moonshine stills were seized this week in Stoddard County by O.H. Cornelius and E.H. Brown, prohibition investigators stationed at Cape Girardeau; the stills, found four miles southeast of Bell City, Mo., bring the number taken so far this month in the district to 12.

The Rev. V.H. Moser, pastor of the Catholic church at Leopold, Mo., is dismissed from St. Francis Hospital after receiving treatment for several days for a flesh wound in his right leg, sustained when a gun he was cleaning accidentally discharged.

100 years ago: Nov. 18, 1907

The Mississippi River Commission and the Board of Examination and Survey of the Mississippi River, studying the feasibility of a 14-foot waterways from St. Louis to the Gulf of Mexico, depart from St. Louis at noon on the way to New Orleans; the delegation, traveling on the steamer Mississippi, should reach Cape Girardeau tomorrow.

Barney Klasing, the carpenter who fell from a scaffold last week and seriously injured his legs, is out on the streets for the first time with the aid of crutches.
