25 years ago: Nov. 18, 1981

State Reps. Jerry Ford and Marvin E. Proffer, both of whom voted in favor of House Speaker Robert Griffin's congressional redistricting plan, say it is a fair plan basically leaving the 10th District of Southeast Missouri intact; predictions are, however, that the Griffin plan won't pass the Senate.

Plans to establish a Cape Girardeau city landfill on an 82-acre site along Highway 75 near Dutchtown draw fire from the Cape Girardeau County Planning Commission, which opposes it; the commission contends the site is in prime farm land, in an area already fairly heavily populated.

50 years ago: Nov. 18, 1956

The Rev. Fred Thomas, evangelist, closes out a revival at the Church of the Nazarene in Cape Girardeau; Thomas was converted at an early age and was called to the public ministry when he was 12 years old.

Mail in a postal box on Henderson Avenue at Broadway is damaged by fire at 4:10 p.m.; much of the contents of the large metal mailbox is badly damaged; firefighters use water from a small hand extinguisher to stop the blaze; the box contained 30 letters and one film.

75 years ago: Nov. 18, 1931

Loot, including three cash registers, two slot machines, two electric fans and an automatic shotgun, allegedly stolen two nights ago from the office of the Yellow Cab Co. at Cairo, Ill., was seized by Cape Girardeau police and an Illinois officer last night at a home in the 300 block of South Frederick Street in Cape Girardeau; the raid followed the alleged confession of one of three men involved in the burglary.

Brickwork has been completed and work on the interior has been started on a new store building being erected at North Main and Mill streets in Cape Girardeau by Hirsch Bros. Co.

100 years ago: Nov. 18, 1906

Cape Girardeau police chief Willis Martin yesterday captured a man accused of having run off with valuable mules and a wagon; as Martin confronted the man on the ferry, the accused jumped from the wagon and drew a foot-long pistol, which he pointed at the law officer.

Nora Naeter, who recently returned from Berlin where she spent several years studying music, will spend the winter in Cape Girardeau; she will take a few pupils for piano study.
