The Arena Building may soon be seen in a new light; the Cape Girardeau City Council will consider awarding a contract next week for the installation of new lighting in the building.

The first two employees of the Cape Girardeau veterans home have been hired by the Missouri Veterans Commission; Terry Ford of Mount Vernon, Missouri, has been hired as administrator and Argie Cox of Cape Girardeau as maintenance plant engineer.

1964

Rep. Paul C. Jones, who inquired into the haste with which the Navy sought action on the armory proposal, says the Navy has extended indefinitely the time the city will have to make a decision on the site; in addition, the Navy has conceded it would be willing for Cape Girardeau to seek a site other than Arena Park for the armory; public opinion about the park location is running heavily against it.

The Cape Girardeau Fire Department's bid for a $20 per month pay increase died yesterday, when the motion of fire commissioner Dewey Hinton to grant the raise failed to receive a second.

1939

Discussion of the appointment by President Roosevelt of a successor to Justice Pierce Butler on the U.S. Supreme Court renews political reports that former senator Russell L. Dearmont is being considered for a high governmental post.

The haircut Adam Sailer, 88, got the other day at the hands of Henry Perr at the College Barber Shop on Broadway was the first he ever had in a commercial shop; Sailer, a prosperous farmer in Bollinger County before he retired and moved here, has always had his hair shingled by friends.

1914

Those two magnificent naval guns, which have attracted the attention of thousands of people since they were mounted in front of the Common Pleas Courthouse three years ago, have to be sent back to the Navy yard at Washington; Victor Blue, assistant secretary of the Navy, has written the city council saying the guns are being recalled to provide protection against enemy airplanes.

Four members of the Cape Girardeau high school football team have been dismissed from the team because of the fight that took place during the game with Jackson on Friday; local authorities have made an effort to make amends with their Jackson counterparts, but haven't succeeded very well so far.
