25 years ago: Nov. 17, 1982

Salvage and rescue operations continue for the towboat Dorothy, which sank in the Mississippi River Saturday morning near Gray's Point, Mo.; the boat capsized during a docking maneuver; two men -- the pilot and a deck hand -- are still missing.

Florsheim Shoe Co. officials say they hope to move into a new factory in Cape Girardeau next summer; Florsheim plans to replace its 75-year-old plant at 700 N. Main St. with a new, $3 million manufacturing facility on the south side of Highway 74 at the junction of South West End Boulevard.

50 years ago: Nov. 17, 1957

The groundwork for what is hoped will be a fine arts guild for Cape Girardeau is laid at a meeting of representatives from several of the city's organizations; Bill Gerhardt, R.P. Smith and Warren Plumb are chosen to draw up tentative plans, constitution and bylaws for the new group.

For the second time in two years, the State College Indians rule as the football champions of the MIAA; Coach Kenny Knox's Braves blanked the Miners on Jacklyn Field at Rolla, Mo., 32-0, maintaining their undefeated conference record; the Indians' overall record for the season is 5-2-1.

75 years ago: Nov. 17, 1932

Cape Girardeau and district are in the grip of another wintry blast, the third in a week, and as the temperature again went down to the 20-degree mark overnight, additional snow is in prospect.

Anticipating a substantial increase in the number of patients during the winter months, Dr. B.A. Wilkes, superintendent of Southeast Missouri Hospital, says preparations are being made to open the third floor of the hospital; at present, only the first and second floors are being used for patients.

100 years ago: Nov. 17, 1907

The Rev. T.O. Ludwig has the regular morning service at the German Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau; but because he is also attending the church at Whitewater, there is no evening service at the Cape Girardeau church.

The Normal School football team yesterday fell to the Rolla (Mo.) Miners by a score of 37-5; next Thursday, the locals will face the Carleton College team of Farmington, Mo.
