The Rev. Earl E. Weiss was honored recently on the occasion of his retiring as pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson; Weiss had been pastor of St. Paul 18 years; he and his wife plan to spend much of their retirement years in Fairfield Bay, Ark.

Dr. Haviland Houston, general secretary, General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church, is the guest preacher at Centenary United Methodist Church.

The Oklahoma Tire and Supply Co. opens its 94th store on North Main Street here; it is the ninth Otasco store built in Missouri and the third in Southeast Missouri, the others being in Poplar Bluff and Sikeston.

Design details of a new dormitory center on the State College campus facing Sprigg Street, expected to be put under construction early in 1962 at a cost of $2,500,000, are reported; the cluster of three men's and three women's group residence halls will range on either side of a knoll extending westward from the Amethyst Street intersection with Sprigg; at the top of the cluster will be a dining-social center for the six structures.

75 years ago: Nov. 16, 1936

E.W. Flentge, chief stockholder and general manager of the Roth Tobacco Co., was stricken with apoplexy while at Boonville, Ind., yesterday; his condition is serious at an Evansville, Ind., hospital.

Fire chief Harry C. Rabe and assistant chief Vincent Unnerstall are off duty, having been suspended from the force by city commissioner Phillip H. Steck; the two refused to accept reductions in their pay, which had been ordered for all firemen.

100 years ago: Nov. 16, 1911

The teachers of Cape Girardeau County are at work here, with many teachers from various towns of the county in attendance at the three-day conference; sessions are being held at the Lorimier School auditorium; special speaker for the conference will be Dr. Paul H. Linn of St. Louis, who will deliver a lecture tomorrow at the Normal School auditorium on "The Philosophy of Living."

Dr. W.C. Patton has returned home from California, where he has been spending some time on his orange plantation.
