The minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Robert H. Michel, is hopeful the upcoming summit between President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev will lead to "some verifiable [nuclear] arms reductions"; Michel is in Cape Girardeau to attend a fund-raising event for U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson.

Barriers leading to the historic Burfordville Covered Bridge were removed yesterday, marking the first time cars and small trucks could cross the bridge since December 1982, when a record flood of the Whitewater River caused serious damage to the 117-year-old span.

50 years ago: Nov. 16, 1960

Despite a lot of sound and fury over 34 challenged ballots, the final tabulation of Cape Girardeau County absentee ballots brought no changes in the outcome of last week's general election; County Clerk Rusby Crites, fortified with instructions from the office of the attorney general, forwarded to the secretary of state the count of ballots as shown on tally sheets, which number 34 more than those in poll books.

Hunting for the first time in 20 years, Truman Gladish of Cape Girardeau bags a six-point, 150-pound buck in Bollinger County.

75 years ago: Nov. 16, 1935

Ready for his hunt for marauding wolves in the Neelys Landing area, Denver M. Wright, St. Louis sportsman, sets up camp determined to rid the area of the animals "if it takes a month"; Sunday he plans a sort of open house for visitors from the community and from Cape Girardeau.

Inaugurating the hunt for fur-bearing animals last night, Clarence Deimund conducted a solo hunt with his dog along Cape LaCroix Creek, west of the city; he reports catching seven opossums and offers to produce the animals as evidence of his success.

100 years ago: Nov. 16, 1910

After 40 years of business in Cape Girardeau, David A. Glenn announces plans to close his store here; Glenn came here from his native home near Eddyville, Ky., in 1870; nine years later, he opened his own business, and in 1901 built his present place of business.

Scott Mitchell has been awarded the contract by the county court to wreck the old county jail for a consideration of $225; the county will keep all salvage.
