The Rev. Arthur England, who has served Christ Episcopal Church on weekends since the middle of August, has been named rector by the parish.

Employers of National Guardsmen are special guests at the day-long "open house" the Guard holds as a celebration of Veterans Day; a mock battle is staged at Arena Park between a rifle platoon, consisting of 43 enlisted men and an officer, and an aggressor force of 12 men.

Celebrating Armistice Day, about 1,000 members of the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary assemble in Jackson for the annual convention of the 14th District of the Legion; one of the main features of the day is a big evening parade.

Cape Girardeau County Sheriff Fred Hartle has 20 bushels of corn on his hands and no owner to claim the grain; the corn was stolen from fields along the farm-to-market road between Neelys Landing and Highway 25, but just where hasn't been established; three men are in jail and admit stealing the corn at night, but they can't remember the exact field from which they got the grain.

1912

Bids are scheduled to be opened tomorrow morning for construction of the Little River Drainage District project at the district's offices in the H.-H. Building; more than 100 contractors are already here to bid on the work.

A party of sportsmen from Fredericktown, Mo., and Perryville, Mo., came in on the Hoxie train last night and leaves this morning on the Gulf local for the lower counties for a hunting expedition; the group included Charles Tessreau, the Perryville baseball pitcher who made a fine record with the New York Giants this past season.
