25 years ago: Nov. 11, 1985

Veterans Day is observed in Cape Girardeau with a parade down Broadway from Capaha Park to Fountain Street, and then to city hall, where a flag-raising ceremony is held; guest speaker at the ceremony is Calvin Vogelsang, a past post and state commander of the VFW and currently a member of the National Security Committee for the VFW and the advisory board of the Missouri Division of Veterans Affairs.

Pet supplies, camera equipment and other items valued at $338 were reported stolen from the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri some time Saturday night.

50 years ago: Nov. 11, 1960

Following the annual Veterans Day parade through the business areas of Cape Girardeau, a program is held in flag-bedecked Houck Stadium; speaking to the assembly is Brig. Gen. Russell Boyt, assistant commander of the 35th Division.

Parking facilities will be greatly enlarged at Trinity Lutheran Church on Frederick Street, when two recently purchased houses are razed; the houses, to the north of the church, are the fourth residential dwellings purchased and demolished by Trinity this year for parking.

75 years ago: Nov. 11, 1935

Twenty-one men are put to work on one phase of the malarial control project of the Works Progress Administration here, it being an effort to remove a mosquito breeding place in the area known as Happy Hollow; others are cleaning ditches near Jackson and Delta; the workers will be paid $35 a month.

Some Girardeans who took part in a half-day wolf hunt in the wild hills near Neelys Landing this weekend report they were unable to find a wolf, although they had four dogs; those participating in the hunt were Ben Griffaw, Lloyd King, Ted Boxdorfer, Marquis and Oscar Seyer, Jack W. Lewis and Roy Griffaw.

100 years ago: Nov. 11, 1910

While strolling through town, Girardeans are urged to stop in at the home of postmaster E.W. Flentge and examine a new chicken coop he has just had built; it is a palatial chicken residence measuring 9 feet long, 6 feet high and 4 feet wide.

The Jackson High School and Normal School's second gridiron team played yesterday to a scoreless tie at Jackson.
