A cold wind whips across the terraces of Academic Hall on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University in the morning as the memory of a Vietnam veteran, Weldon J. Ruebel of Cape Girardeau, is honored; a blue spruce is planted in his honor.

More than $7 million toward projects in Cape Girardeau County is included in the $350 million capital improvements bond package sent out of the Missouri House Budget Committee yesterday for consideration by the full House; included is $6,250,605 for several improvements at Southeast Missouri State University.

50 years ago: Nov. 11, 1958

A sizable crowd, somewhat larger than that of last year, gathers in front of the bandstand in Capaha Park to take part in the annual Veterans Day service and to hear Circuit Judge Michael J. Carroll of Overland, Mo., pay tribute to the service of American men and women in the nation's armed conflicts and issue a plea for peace.

A request for a zoning change to allow expansion of his ceramics business was made by G.L. Anderson, 2256 Kingshighway, at a meeting of the Cape Girardeau City Council yesterday; Anderson is seeking to change zoning from one-family residence to light industry.

The Missouri Utilities Co. notifies Cape Girardeau that Monday it will seek an injunction to restrain the city from proceeding with the projected special election Tuesday at which a 20-year franchise for the company is scheduled to be submitted.

Contractor E.L. Markham finishes paving the south section of the Bend Road slab project north of Cape Girardeau and expects to proceed with the short section at the north end next week.

100 years ago: Nov. 11, 1908

In the process of moving its press and equipment to its new building in the 200 block of Broadway, The Daily Republican again is forced to suspend publication.

Two big bath tubs are seen on the Jackson overland express wagon going out Broadway; somebody in that town is preparing for a "personal fumigation."
