25 years ago: Nov. 11, 1982

A large American flag, which can be seen from a long distance, is raised over Cape County Park, as use of the new war memorial is inaugurated; the memorial, funded by seven local organizations, will be dedicated on Memorial Day.

Veterans Day in Cape Girardeau is marked by its annual parade along Broadway; speaking at the ceremony which follows is Associate Circuit Judge A.J. Seier.

50 years ago: Nov. 11, 1957

Veterans Day; following a parade organized by the American legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled Veterans groups, a memorial service is conducted at the band shell in Capaha Park; guest speaker is Roy Carver of Jefferson City, American Legion state service and finance officer.

Voters in the R-4 school district north of Cape Girardeau Saturday turned down a proposal to issue bonds amounting to $150,000 which would have permitted construction of a new central grade school.

75 years ago: Nov. 11, 1932

The heaviest November snow in 40 years struck Cape Girardeau late yesterday, continued into the night and for hours hampered traffic on streets and highways; six inches of snow were recorded.

Armistice Day is observed in Cape Girardeau with a religious service in the morning sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance at Grace Methodist Church; the American Legion stages a program in the afternoon at Courthouse Park; it's followed by a parade out Broadway to Houck Field House, where the Teachers College and the Carbondale, Ill., teams meet on the gridiron; the two battle to a scoreless tie.

100 years ago: Nov. 11, 1907

Word is received from St. Louis that a special session of federal court will be held in Cape Girardeau Nov. 19; the main intention of the court is to settle the August Ruesskamp matter; the Ruesskamp property on Broadway is wanted by the government for a federal building.

J. McElroy, the electrician, has been awarded the contract to furnish and install all the electrical fixtures in the new Jackson courthouse.
