25 years ago: Nov. 11, 1981

Jackson lawyer Albert C. Lowes is the guest speaker at the Veterans Day program at Cape Girardeau's city hall in the morning; about 70 people, including members of various veterans organizations and auxiliary groups, attend in the program.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Howard C. Tooke has filed his petition of candidacy for another term as mayor; if elected to a four-year term, by the end of his term in 1986 Tooke will have served 13 years as mayor, longer than any other mayor since Cape Girardeau was incorporated in 1843.

50 years ago: Nov. 11, 1956

Closing service of Forty Hours Devotion is held in the afternoon at St. Mary Cathedral; the Rev. Joseph H. Huels, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Caruthersville, Mo., and director of the Southeast Missouri Missionary, preaches, and the Rev. Elmer Stolle, M.A., pastor of St. John's Church in Leopold, Mo., is celebrant.

The new public school at Gordonville, part of the Jackson system, has been completed, and an open house is held in the afternoon; the new school is on the same plot where a frame, two-room schoolhouse stood for many years.

75 years ago: Nov. 11, 1931

Aside from a religious service arranged by the Cape Girardeau Ministerial Alliance, no public observance in the form of a meeting is held to recognize Armistice Day here; the worship service is held in the morning at Christ Episcopal Church, with the address being given by Dr. Marion N. Waldrip of Centenary Methodist Church.

The new addition to the Franklin School will be formally opened Monday night, when visitors will be shown through it; the program for the event will include a talk by A.M. Spradling, president of the Cape Girardeau Board of Education.

100 years ago: Nov. 11, 1906

The Rt. Rev. Daniel S. Tuttle conducts morning and evening services at the Episcopal Church at Cape Girardeau.

The strong football team from the Rolla, Mo., school of mines took on the Cape Girardeau Normal team yesterday afternoon; the locals had been practicing hard since the disastrous game with Kirksville, Mo., and every man was in a mood to play the game of his life; their efforts paid off, as they downed the visitors 16-6; star of the game was Capt. Courleux.
