Veterans Day. Pearl Harbor veterans were honored yesterday during Veterans Day ceremony at Freedom Corner in Capaha Park following parade; Dec. 7 marks 50th anniversary of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor; estimated crowd of 300 people, including many veterans and their families, attended event.
Metropolis, Ill. - Decision by Illinois Gaming Board to allow floating casino at Metropolis has crushed hopes of another Southern Illinois city - Cairo, at confluence of Ohio and Mississippi rivers; gaming board approved request of California-based Players International Inc. to run casino operation out of Metropolis on Ohio River.

Veterans Day. Four local bands participate in annual Veterans Day parade down Broadway; large crowd braves chilly 39-degree weather to watch 30-unit parade pass by; many also attend ceremonies following parade at Houck Field House.
More than week after Nov. 2 general election, there is still no firm decision from Rep. Gary W. Rust on whether he will resign his 156th state legislative seat; question over seat should be answered soon; Rust, who has yet to decide what he will do, indicated yesterday that pending developments concerning his publishing business will affect his decision.

Armistice Day. Because holiday comes on Sunday, observance of Armistice Day will be tomorrow; courthouse, City Hall, banks, loan associations and post office will close, but business houses in Cape Girardeau, generally, will be open; members of American Legion and Legion Auxiliary travel to Sikeston to attend organization's annual Armistice Day meeting.
The Rev. Raymond R. Chappel preaches his farewell sermons at Foursquare Church; the Rev. and Mrs. Chappell and their daughter, Carolyn, 4, leave in evening for Fort Worth, Texas, where he will continue in evangelistic field; no successor has been named in pastorate here.
75 years ago: Nov. 11, 1926
Armistice Day passes in Cape Girardeau without special observance, although banks and federal offices are closed for day, and flags are displayed in business section of town; at Benton, crowd fills circuit court room for ceremony held under direction of Judge Frank Kelly; practice of having such ceremony was inaugurated by Kelly several years ago; principal addresses are made by Kelly and Roy V. Ellise, superintendent of schools at Sikeston.
With only $6,000 yet to be subscribed, campaign committee in charge of work of securing subscription of $45,000 to guarantee construction of $500,000 hotel in Cape Girardeau hopes to reach quota before nightfall or early tomorrow.
