Southeast Missouri State University is planning to tear down an old hay barn, built with hand-hewn logs and wooden pegs; but Richard Renfrow, whose family donated the property north of the country club to the university for a bird sanctuary, hopes the barn can be saved.

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board approves sweeping revisions in a proposed series of park fees; among the major changes is elimination of a number of proposed fees for the use of park facilities by local groups and Southeast Missouri State University.

50 years ago: Nov. 10, 1961

An early morning fire severely damages the inside of the abandoned Missouri Pacific freight depot on Independence Street; firemen warn children to stay away from derelict buildings because of the hazard of falling bricks.

United Fund directors last night voted to continue the community's major fund-raising agency, but not until they heard some plain-spoken words from their chairman, J. Hugh Logan; not once since the United Fund campaign was initiated in 1955 has the full budget been met.

75 years ago: Nov. 10, 1936

BENTON, Mo. -- Members of the Circuit Court petit jury are dismissed by Judge Frank Kelly, although they were here only two days of the term; the county court allowed $2,100 in the budget for running the Circuit Court this year, but it was used up today; the jurors had to be sent home as they can't be paid.

The Cape Girardeau School Board is getting closer to letting a contract for the new grade school to be built at the Old Lorimier site; it is also revealed that S.D. McFarland, owner of a dwelling and large grounds east of the tract, has offered to sell the property to the district.

100 years ago: Nov. 10, 1911

Henry Brinkopf and Julius Meyer Jr. are home again after helping U.S. Marshal E.F. Regenhardt deposit a bunch of bad men in the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kan.; when that bunch of lawbreakers saw the Cape Girardeau County deputies, they gave up all hope of making a getaway and went quietly to the lockup.

Mrs. August Rodenmayer of Kelso, Mo., spends the day in Cape Girardeau visiting her sister, Anna Rice.
