Dr. August T. Mennicke, first vice president of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, is guest preacher at Trinity Lutheran Church; he delivers the sermons for Reformation Day Festival services, and is the keynote convocation speaker for the Bootheel, Cape Girardeau and Jackson circuits of Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

The Rev. William H. Simpson is installed as pastor of Second Baptist Church; Simpson comes to Cape Girardeau from Sikeston, Mo.

1962

Merchants and businessmen are out in the morning washing soap markings from the windows of their buildings; but their tasks are lightened by the small amount of markings considerate ghosts and goblins put on during their Halloween prowlings; although streets were overrun by little folks, there was little vandalism.

The Greyhound bus station begins operating at 1215 Independence St., in the Budget Laundry Building; the business was moved yesterday from its former location at Broadway and Highway 61.

1937

Ideal weather prevails for cotton picking in Southeast Missouri, but there is an almost general shortage of pickers; the going price for pickers is 75 cents per 100 pounds.

The Cape Girardeau garbage disposal problem, which has slumbered several months, is revived at the city council meeting; Leo Williamson, living just north of the city, asks if the city would be interested in a new contract, saying he can dispose of the garbage at $65 per month for the coming six months; he would supply the trucks needed.

1912

The four carts ordered by the city council several weeks ago for use in cleaning Cape Girardeau's business streets arrive in the morning; a cart will be used on Main Street, one on Broadway, another on Good Hope Street, and the fourth will be for the use of the street commissioner in cleaning out manholes or sewers, or any other job where he may need it.

F.A. Ellison, who has been in business in Kansas City, will open the F.A. Ellison Grocery Co. on Main Street on Nov. 11; he will occupy the Oliver property, near the Vogelsanger hardware store; Ellison is married to the daughter of John F. Vogelsanger.
