State Rep. Mary Kasten of Cape Girardeau has helped organize a statewide conference that examined issues facing day cares in Missouri; last week's conference in Jefferson City was attended by about 175 people representing all segments of the day-care industry.
David Hoelscher, a Midland, Texas, investor, and Associated Equipment Co. Inc. of Pearland, Texas, have offered to buy debt-ridden Lenco Inc. of Jackson for $2.8 million.
Cape Girardeau has 14,917 registered voters eligible for the general elections to be held Nov. 3; this represents a net gain in registration of 1,086 since the city primary in March.
Capaha Park's baseball diamond, once the most beautiful in Southeast Missouri, will again have a grass infield; the grass infield was planted when the St. Louis Browns held spring training here in the early 1940s; a year ago, however, it was skinned after years of neglect; new park commissioner Harry Siemers ordered grass planted this fall, and already the infield has a green appearance.
Helen Batjer, formerly of Cape Girardeau, is teaching at Big Rock, Tennessee, in the heart of the tobacco-raising district of that state.
CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- Backing up President Roosevelt in an address at the fair here, U.S. Sen. Harry S. Truman says he favors repeal of the present embargo act and heartily endorses Roosevelt's "cash and carry" plan of selling supplies to foreign nations.
The store and stock of the Caldwell-Sherman Clothing Store on Main Street were destroyed by fire, water and smoke last evening; Ike Caldwell and Sam Sherman are unable to say whether the store will be rebuilt.
A rainfall of 2.45 inches last evening and this morning nearly sets a record for October rains in Cape Girardeau; enjoyed by most, contractors find no pleasure in the downpour; Harmon Loeffel had two blocks of Benton Street ready to be concreted, but the rains caused considerable washing, and the work will have to be redone.
