The State Park Board authorizes the issuance of $200,000 in revenue bonds to help finance the construction of a small boat harbor at Trail of Tears State Park; the harbor will be constructed at the foot of Moccasin Springs Road.

Cape Girardeau County retail merchants will join those of the rest of the state Sunday in collecting an extra penny for each dollar in sales; the new sales tax law, raising the levy from two to three percent, goes into effect at midnight Saturday.

1938

Tentative plans have been made for the proposed superstructure of the Church of the Nazarene, and it is expected the building will be built during the coming year; in recent years, services have been held in the basement structure, over when the new building will be constructed.

The Rev. R.M. Crenshaw preaches his first sermons as pastor of the Assembly of God Church; he succeeds the Rev. Paul Gaston; Crenshaw, his wife and two daughters moved here from Illmo, where he formerly was pastor.

1913

The first public services in connection with the building of the magnificent new hospital by the Franciscan Sisters here will occur Sunday afternoon; a corner stone will be laid at 3 p.m. with much ceremony; it is possible Archbishop John Glennon of St. Louis will make the pilgrimage to the city to take part in the exercises.

Purcell Culp, a 6-year-old pupil at Lorimier School, escaped being swallowed bodily by a huge snake a day or so ago, only to fall down an embankment and break his right arm; according to the boy, he was out on the school's recreation grounds when he encountered the "20-foot-long reptile"; he fell while trying to make a quick escape.
