25 years ago: Oct. 8, 1984

The old Jackson post office building on Main Street has been sold to the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, which will remodel the building for use as chamber offices and the Jackson license bureau.

Robert Hagedorn, who owns and operates Clothes Encounters, a fashion shop at 19 N. Main St., has purchased the former Pind's Jewelers building at the northeast corner of Main and Independence streets; the new owner will move his store into the building around the first of the month.

50 years ago: Oct. 8, 1959

The old First National Bank Building on Main Street is being rebuilt from ground to roof by its owner, C.A. Hood; crews are tearing out the interior of the two-story building, which will be reduced to sidewalk level; the first floor is now reached by a flight of stairs set back from an arched stone entrance.

Mayor Walter H. Ford clips a ribbon across the Main Street entrance to the F.W. Woolworth store in the morning to formally open a three-day observance of the firm's 80th birthday in its newly remodeled quarters.

75 years ago: Oct. 8, 1934

Partial remodeling of the store building at 622-624 Broadway, owned by C.J. Haman and formerly occupied by the Haman Shoe Store, is expected to be completed Wednesday, when the Publix Cleaners will move from its present location at 632 Broadway.

DETROIT, Mich. -- The St. Louis Cardinals rise to the most brilliant heights of the World Series to drive to victory behind young Paul Dean, defeat the great Lynwood "Schoolboy" Rowe, and win the sixth game, 4-3, tying the Series count at three games each.

100 years ago: Oct. 8, 1909

Broadway seems peopled with nonprogressives; deputy sheriff W.H. Summers serves notice on acting Mayor J.T. Juden that several residents on that street will appear before Common Pleas Court Judge Robert G. Ranney to ask that the city council be restrained from letting a contract to pave Broadway from Lorimier Street to Middle Street, as the council intended to do.

A.J. Vogel of New Wells has rented the Klages building on Broadway, opposite the H.-H. Building, in which he will establish a branch agency for Ford automobiles.
