1989

The city of Cape Girardeau is challenging Jackson's claim of "prior jurisdiction" in an annexation dispute over a 100-acre area west of Interstate 55.

A teepee was recovered and five people arrested in conjunction with what seems to have been a pregame prank that tarnished yesterday's Jackson-Cape Girardeau Central football rivalry; four Cape Girardeau teenagers and a juvenile were arrested by Jackson police; the teepee was recovered from a Town Plaza Shopping Center trash Dumpster.

1964

State College has a total enrollment of 4,383 on the Cape Girardeau campus, a record; the figure is an increase of more than 400 over last year's number and exceeds the official prediction of 4,200 for the year.

Work is proceeding on installing a new water gate for the Apple Creek mill pond at Old Appleton; residents of Old Appleton, as well as people owning cabins along the mill pond, upstream from there, are doing the work.

1939

Centenary Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau might soon be in the oil business; E.M. Gould of Cape Girardeau, who operates an oil well drilling rig in Illinois, has assigned oil rights on a 40-acre tract in Jersey County, Illinois, to the church.

In view of possible purchase of the traffic bridge here by the city, Mayor Edward L. Drum has started a survey to determine the likely date a similar bridge would be built across the Mississippi River at Chester, Illinois, if one is built there.

1914

Nearly a mile of the diversion canal south of the city, which is to carry the water from the Cape Girardeau and Bollinger county foothills to the river, has been completed by the operation of the two huge dredging machines the last two months.

Contractor T.J. Shorb completes the concrete work on the first block of Fountain Street by noon and starts on the second block immediately after the dinner hour.
