An overnight rise of four-tenths of a foot below the stage which had been expected here today offers some encouragement that the swollen Mississippi River may still crest this weekend at less than 44 feet; the river was 39.4 feet here at 6 a.m.
The Cape Girardeau County Commission, in cooperation with the VFW Post 3838, took action yesterday that will allow family members to remember deceased veterans with a "parade of flags" three times a year at Cape County Park; the flags will circle the war memorial which includes a towering American flag; if necessary, the flags could also be put along the roadway leading into the park.
Jay Silverheels -- Tonto of the Lone Ranger shows -- is scheduled to appear this afternoon at the Town Plaza Shopping Center; he, along with stars Bill Foster and Rawhide Smith, will meet with fans and sign autographs.
The recently completed downtown parking lot and service station, a project of Downtown Parking Inc., formally opened this weekend; representing a total investment of $220,000, the lot on Broadway between Main and Water streets provides space for 125 cars; included in the cost is the Sinclair service station, which faces on Main Street, just north of Broadway.
U.G. Lewellen, field man for the Missouri Petroleum Industries Committee, an organization of oil producers, is in Cape Girardeau assisting retail oil dealers and others in their efforts to repeal a special city gasoline tax; most gasoline stations here have started collecting the 1-cent-per-gallon tax.
State commander H.H. Lark of Steeleville, Ill., addresses 127 Legionnaires in the evening, as new officers for the Louis K. Juden Post of the American Legion are installed; new post commander is Dr. I.W. Upshaw.
In the future, the fuel company that has been known as Shellbark Fuel Co. will be known as the West End Fuel Co.
U.S. Marshal E. Regenhardt arrives here from St. Louis to get ready for the holding of federal court next week; Judge D.F. Dyer and other members of the court will come down on the steamer Peters Lee, arriving tomorrow.
