Possibly the largest sale of apartment buildings in Cape Girardeau's history was finalized last week by the purchase of eight buildings along Themis Street; the buildings, which include 54 family units, were purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Johnson of Advance, Mo., and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Johnson of St. Louis from Bean Properties, which is owned by Frank Bean.

The dry cleaning division of Tipton's Inc. has been sold to Courtesy Enterprises Inc. here; Tipton's, 1415 Independence St., will continue to operate a commercial laundry service.

50 years ago: Oct. 7, 1960

Rapid growth of Trail of Tears State Park as a recreation center and tourist attraction for a wide area is reflected in attendance figures; a total of 59,118 visitors to the park has been counted since the season got underway; in addition, 833 camping groups have used the park's riverfront camping area.

Alvin D. Milde, 71, owner of Milde Coca Cola Bottling Co., died yesterday; Milde was born in Jackson and spent his whole life there.

75 years ago: Oct. 7, 1935

More Works Progress Administration projects have been approved for Cape Girardeau and the county; although not specifically designated as such, one item is believed to cover the proposed razing of old Lorimier School.

Winter descends with sudden severity on Cape Girardeau and the region, bringing the season's first killing frost; the mercury slides to 36 degrees here and to lower marks in other parts of the county, killing tender vegetation such as garden crops and damaging 25 percent of the county's late corn crop.

100 years ago: Oct. 7, 1910

In compliance with Mayor M.E. Leming's proclamation declaring today a legal holiday in honor of the abbreviated Cape Girardeau fair, The Daily Republican isn't published; all other business houses in the city are closed for the day as well.

Charles H. Gelvin, the florist, is progressing with his business; indications are that by next summer he will have all the business he can handle; in the past it has been necessary for all Southeast Missouri to send to St. Louis for flowers.
