With New Year that began Sept. 28, and Yom Kippur - holiest day on Jewish calendar - starting at sundown, Jews everywhere are celebrating High Holidays; in Cape Girardeau, Jews gather at Synagogue B'Nai Israel at sundown; leading services as cantor for ninth consecutive year is Don Makovsky, executive director of Bloch Yeshiva High School in St. Louis; Rabbi Stanley Krantman of St. Louis officiates.

25 years ago: Oct. 6, 1977

Missouri Highway Department Wednesday changed construction plans at Highway 61 and Route W to permit emergency and local access to Route W via Kingsway while construction is under way; after studying alternatives to original plan, which called for closing access to Route W completely for about a month, highway department reached agreement to alter design with project contractor, R.B. Potashnick.

Gov. Joseph P. Teasdale has taken side of conservationists in opposing channelization of St. Francis River near Fisk; governor has informed Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District, of his opinion of plan; Teasdale's opposition is first expressed by major political figure and is viewed as victory for conservationists.

Temperature dips to 39 degrees in morning, coldest of season, but latest forecast is for freezing weather tonight over entire state, with thermometer falling into range from 26 to 32 degrees.

Two former Cape Girardeau men made major news in petroleum field Saturday when their firm acquired 30,000 acres of leases in rich oil-producing area of Montana and announced plans for $2,000,000 development program; announcement of transaction was made by Earl E. Hazen, secretary of Associates International Ltd., who joined his cousin, H.H. Haas, in business several weeks ago.

75 years ago: Oct. 6, 1927

With four large plate girders in place, more spectacular part of early work on superstructure of Cape Girardeau traffic bridge is over, and preparations are being made for starting on second span; first span on Missouri shore, from west approach to Pier One, is in place; caisson work and other activities on river are still being interrupted by high stage of stream.

Benton - Thousands gather for third annual Neighbor Day, celebration which within short time has become popular and distinctive institution; on every hand there is the greeting, "Howdy, Neighbor," the official salutation for the day.
