Allen Moss Jr., has been hired by the city of Cape Girardeau to replace Ian Sutherland as a new assistant city attorney prosecuting municipal cases; Sutherland resigned in mid-September to take a job with the county prosecuting attorney's office.

1963

A.C. Brase, chairman of the Arena Improvement Committee, hopes an outdoor ice skating rink will be constructed before cold weather, probably in Arena Park; it will involve skimming off the grass on a patch of ground roughly 100 by 1,240 feet, applying a clay surface and constructing a sloping lip; just two or three inches of water would be used in the basin, it is believed; the rink might be converted to tennis courts during the summer.

Riverside Lumber Co., established in 1903, is observing its 60th anniversary; its original location at 314 S. Ellis St., was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1925; the company then rebuilt at its present location at Morgan Oak and Fountain streets.

1938

Fred Hearn, a Teachers College freshman who is working his way through school, says he will open a "jumbo" hamburger stand on Highway 61 Friday evening; Hearn has built his place, along a modernistic pattern, chiefly on funds he earned by selling hamburgers to WPA workers at the new city park project; his stand will be open at noon and evenings, and between classes.

Burwell Fox, 89, father of Burwell Fox Jr., of Cape Girardeau, died yesterday of infirmities of advanced age at Columbia, Mo.; after a brief law practice, he embarked on a 60-year educational career, mostly in Washington County; along with his son, Fox is survived by three grandchildren, Burwell Fox III, Helen Fox and Mary Russell Fox.

1913

A dozen automobiles were destroyed yesterday evening, when the Hope-Cotner garage burned with nearly a total financial loss for their owners; the only insurance carried on any of the machines was held by that lucky laundryman, Herman Bock, who had $300 in policies on the two cars he had in the building at the time; the garage was located in the old woolen mill building on Independence Street.

Fred, the big fire horse substituting for Alec in making up the team, is badly injured when his feet go out form under him; assistant fireman Oberheide is racing the big pair down Independence Street, when Fred's feet slip from under him; he goes down heavily and is dragged a considerable distance.
