A blocked vent from the stoker furnace in Trinity Lutheran Church caused considerable damage Friday night when fans in the furnace blew out a heavy covering of smoke and oily soot into every part of the building; throughout Saturday, about 30 women of the church cleaned to make the building usable for today's services.
The congregation of First Christian Church extends a call to the Rev. Donald Pelsue of St. Joseph, Mo., who is a guest speaker at the morning worship service; he accepts the call.
75 years ago: Oct. 5, 1933
Mrs. Warren L. Mabrey of Cape Girardeau has been elected president of the Missouri Parent-Teacher Congress; she served a long time as president and then secretary of the Parent-Teacher Council in Cape Girardeau, and she also works with the Central, Washington and Franklin units.
Cape Girardeau's Golden Troopers, the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps, return home from the national convention in Chicago, not as national champions, but as virtual champions of the Middle West; the city's outfit beat everything in the national contest in the Midwest, and only six corps west of the Mississippi River ranked above the locals.
100 years ago: Oct. 5, 1908
Accountant John F. Wilson falls dead from a heart failure in the trust company banking room at 2:30 p.m.; he and G.B. Buist, representing the firm of Whilkinson, Reckett, Williamson & Co., certified accountants of Chicago, were here to audit the books of the trust company.
With prospects said to be brighter than ever before, the Cape Girardeau County fair will open tomorrow morning; it will hardly be noticeable, however; no parade nor other observance will mark the event.
