At least 75 percent of property owners at Twin Lakes subdivision, west of Cape Girardeau, are asking city to annex 155-acre tract; Ray Miller, president of Twin Lake Homeowners Association, says residents of subdivision are requesting annexation to assure adequate water and sewer service and police and fire protection.

Disabled American Veterans Chapter 16 wants its own permanent facility in Cape Girardeau; chapter, which is currently using facilities of Naval Reserve Center, is mounting $10,000 fund drive to help buy structure at 1000 Big Bend Road, which formerly housed church.

25 years ago: Oct. 5, 1977

City operation of Jaycee Golf Course was discussed briefly yesterday by Cape Girardeau City Council, which authorized separate account in budget and earmarked $100,000 for operation of course.

Any decision city council reaches concerning mass transit system for Cape Girardeau will be heavily influenced by amount of money needed to subsidize the service, two councilmen suggest; council formally receives Missouri Department of Transportation study on mass transit; afterwards, Councilmen Paul W. Stehr and Samuel L. Gill both say there are many questions to be answered before final decision is made; initial start-up cost for system would be $137,000, and annual subsidy to run it could reach $70,000.

50 years ago: Oct. 5, 1952

Dedication ceremony is held in afternoon for Cherokee Indian "Trail of Tears" marker on Highway 51, 13 miles south of Farmington; Floyd Shoemaker, secretary of State Historical Society, is speaker; Shoemaker visited historic spots in Southeast Missouri last week; while in Cape Girardeau Thursday, he recalled that Trail of Tears crossed Mississippi River at Moccasin Springs, in Cape Girardeau County, in 1837.

In cooperation with Worldwide Communion Day, Church of Nazarene has special Communion service; choir sings under direction of Gerald Jenkins, and the Rev. C.E. Fleshman speaks on the subject, "The Lord's Table."

75 years ago: Oct. 5, 1927

Fox hunters of Cape Girardeau have organized and announce that genuine old-time hunt and encampment will be held here Nov. 4, 5 and 6; Frank E. McDonald, farmer of north of Cape Girardeau, was elected president of Cape County Fox Hunters' Association at meeting last night.

Clarence "Tubby" Koch has enrolled at Teachers College, former Central High School athletic star having returned from Westminster College where he went two weeks ago; he will be unable to participate in athletic contests this year, however, college authorities holding that entrance at Westminster would bar him for 18 weeks from participating in contests at local college.
