25 years ago: Oct. 4, 1985

An exhibit detailing the history of rural Cape Girardeau County schools opens at the Southeast Missouri State University Museum; the display was coordinated through the efforts of Christabel Lacy and Bob White of the university's Center for Regional History and Cultural Heritage.

50 years ago: Oct. 4, 1960

Hot-rodders who have been using the track at Arena Park for unauthorized stock car and sports car racing are warned by city officials that it is a violation of city law and arrests will be made.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department has acquired the second new patrol car in two weeks when a 1961 model was purchased; the other car was a 1960 model; the department now boasts one 1961, one 1957 and two 1960 automobiles.

75 years ago: Oct. 4, 1935

Kathryn Hirsch Dittlinger, 82, a pioneer resident of Cape Girardeau, died last night at a local hospital; she sustained a fractured right hip last Saturday, when she fell from a chair at the home of a daughter, Mrs. E.M. Thilenius, with whom she made her home; she was removed to a hospital, but failed to rally from the shock of the injury.

Advance sales of tickets for the "Elam Vangilder Day" baseball game to be played between the Cape Girardeau Capahas and the Big Bucks at Illmo indicate that a large crowd will be on hand; the entire proceeds from the game will be turned over to Vangilder, who has returned from a hospital in Denver, Colo., where he has been recuperating from an infection in his right arm.

100 years ago: Oct. 4, 1910

The new Cape Girardeau Federal Building will be dedicated with an oratory-filled program Oct. 10, the date of the first session of the federal court in the new building.

Rain interferes with the opening of the fair in Cape Girardeau; water comes down in torrents, flooding the fairgrounds during the scheduled morning opening; the sun peeks out weakly at times throughout the afternoon.
