Thirty-four of remaining Harris Field pilot instructors, who trained pilots at Cape Girardeau air field during World War II, return to Cape Girardeau to share their wartime memories; occasion for reunion of Harris Field Warbirds was 50th anniversary of founding of 73rd Army Air Forces Training Detachment/Cape Institute of Aeronautics, Inc., Primary Flight Training School.

25 years ago: Oct. 4, 1977

Missouri Department of Transportation has forwarded to Cape Girardeau draft copies of preliminary report proposing bus routes for mass transit system; report has been given to council members for review, but it won't be made public until formally presented by MoDOT planners.

General aviation funds totaling almost $146,000 have been set aside for commercial airport improvements at Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport, Federal Aviation Agency has announced; Robert E. Gass, airport manager and parks superintendent, said that $145,917 funding will be used for installation of water tower at airport for fire-fighting purposes and, possibly, for enlarging ramp area south of Cape Central Airways facilities.

50 years ago: Oct. 4, 1952

Discussion of possibilities of public recreation lake in Cape Girardeau County -- proposal advanced many times during his lifetime by late John Putz of Jackson -- is being revived among sportsmen of county; matter came up again in backwash of announcement last week by Missouri Conservation Commission that it will build such public area near Hunnewell in Shelby County in Northeast Missouri.

Hillside on north side of Highway 61, just inside Cape Girardeau city limits, is being graded level to prepare for construction of new tourist court to be put up by Louis Bahn.

75 years ago: Oct. 4, 1927

Southern Methodist Church ministers in Cape Girardeau depart for St. Louis, where they will attend annual meeting of St. Louis Conference; conference marks close of four-year service as presiding elder of Cape Girardeau district of the Rev. A.C. Johnson; rule of church prohibits presiding elder serving district longer than that time; it is believed the Rev. P.C. Thogmorton of Caruthersville will be new presiding elder.

Two days' work of American Bridge Co., contractor for erection of superstructure of Cape Girardeau traffic bridge, has considerably altered appearance of bridge site on Missouri bank of Mississippi River; most of steel for first span, from west approach to Pier 1, has been put in place.
