Cape Girardeau County Sheriff Norman Copeland says he is seeking another term because he wants to continue the same level of quality law enforcement his office has provided the last two-and-a-half-years he has held office; William Stone says he is running for sheriff because the department has become stagnant under Copeland.
The city of Cape Girardeau has filed its second annexation petition in circuit court in less than a month in an effort to pursue the third phase of its annexation plan; the petition seeks a declaratory judgment that would allow the city to submit the proposed annexation to a vote; the city wants to annex a 159-acre tract northeast of the Interstate 55-U.S. 61 intersection between Cape Girardeau and Jackson.
Apparently Halloween started a little early at a county road bridge near Neelys Landing; a school bus driver from that vicinity reports that the flooring on a wooden bridge there had been partly removed, making the bridge impassible; the bridge will have to be completely rebuilt.
