Teresa Maurer was recently nominated for the annual Diocesan Council of Catholic Women award for laywomen of the year from St. Vincent's Parish in Cape Girardeau; Maurer is a homemaker, mother and music teacher at St. Vincent's School.
Garland D. "Frony" Fronabarger last week marked his 56th year with the Southeast Missourian; while he started out with the newspaper in 1927 as a cub reporter, he is best known as its photographer and business writer.

A young portrait painter, Billy Price Hosmer of Memphis, Tenn., will be the guest artist at The Missourian's annual Art Exhibition this year; she will exhibit 20 paintings at the show Nov. 22 and 23.
The Cape Girardeau School Board opens bids for a new school to serve the town's rapidly developing northwestern residential area; Ben Sides Construction Co. of Cape Girardeau is the apparent low bidder on the general contract.
75 years ago: Oct. 30, 1933
A robber gang of three men and a woman is sought after it staged three holdups Saturday night in Cape Girardeau and apparently sought to pull another; a taxicab driver, answering a call sent in by a woman, was kidnapped and bound to a tree, and in the few hours that elapsed before the cab was found abandoned, two stores in outlying sections were held up; shortly before the abduction of the cab driver, an attempt to hold up a truck carrying the payroll for a stone company at Neelys Landing was frustrated.
Walter Kinder, former Jackson High basketball star, is coaching the Will Mayfield College squad this season.
100 years ago: Oct. 30, 1908
With the construction of Cape Girardeau's new sewer system complete, Mayor W.C. Patton and the city council are demanding the streets be fixed up properly before they accept the system from the contractor.
Despite the urgent call of the president, members of the Commercial Club ignored his appeal for a meeting last night; he had wanted them to consider the proposal to form a company here for the manufacture of threshing machines.
