Cape Girardeau police officers were put through their paces Friday at department's firing range as force conducted its semi-annual firearms qualification testing; each officer had to score 70 percent in firing 50 rounds at distance from arm's length to 25 yards from target.

Damage to trees burned in Gravel Hills woods fire this week is estimated at $30 an acre by Richard Holekamp, farm forester of State Forestry Division, after tour of area; Holekamp estimates that 1,950 acres lay in this fire area, 1,250 on north side of Highway 34 and 700 on south side, west of Gravel Hill.
Hundreds of grade and high school pupils daub Halloween art on Cape Girardeau store windows in annual painting contest sponsored by Kiwanis Club; 215 display windows, on Broadway, Main, Good Hope, Spanish and Sprigg streets, are to be filled with murals; cash prizes will be awarded in three divisions.

The Rev. Alphon Mendenhall, pastor of First Christian Church of Aurora, preaches at both morning and evening services of First Christian Church of Cape Girardeau, coming here on invitation from pulpit supply committee; he looks over church and meets with members with view of accepting pastorate of Cape Girardeau church.
Oak Ridge - Oak Ridge Farmers Institute, held Friday and Saturday, was marked by record attendance; more than 1,200 people attended yesterday, and nearly that many were present Friday; horse show was feature of fair, while cow-calling contest drew number of entrants.
