50 years ago: Oct. 3, 1958
Two St. Louis men, en route from Kentucky Lake to St. Louis aboard their 40-foot cabin cruiser, ran aground in the Mississippi River a mile north of Thebes Ill., last night and were the center of a nightlong rescue effort; Russell Goehring and Clyde Foeste of Cape Girardeau reach the stranded cruiser at 3 a.m., bringing one of the men ashore while the other stayed with the boat.
Gene Martin, who for a number of years was on the staff of the Cape Girardeau Public Library, is elected president of the Public Library Division of the Missouri Library Association.
75 years ago: Oct. 3, 1933
Slightly more than 2,000 people viewed the George V. Adams Rodeo showing last night at Fairground Park, when the demonstration of daring opened the second annual Horse Show for Cape Girardeau; 50 riders and clowns entertained the crowd, while the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band played in the stand.
Because of limited resources, the Jackson City Council has rejected a plan to purchase the Sanford property, a 12-acre parcel of native timber in the northern limits of the city, for park purposes and recreational grounds.
100 years ago: Oct. 3, 1908
The city council has worked great improvements to Common Pleas Courthouse Park; it has placed benches and lights around the park and kept the grass in good condition; with a new jail assured, residents are looking forward to the removal of the old jail and the other unsightly buildings standing near it; the ladies of the Women's Relief Corps continue to gather funds for erection of a commemorative drinking fountain to be placed in the square.
Grace Sharp leaves in the morning for Maplewood, Mo., near St. Louis, to take the position of supervisor of music and drawing in the public schools there.
