A chorus of "hallelujahs" from jubilant members of a local congregation greeted the city council last night after a liquor license for a proposed tavern near the church was rejected; by a 5-to-1 vote, the council denied the license for a tavern at 316 S. Sprigg St. after members of the True Christian Pentecostal Witness Church, 325 S. Sprigg St., voiced strong opposition.

Bob Daugherty, who about 10 years ago fixed the old clock in the county courthouse at Jackson and who has maintained it ever since, has told the county commission it's time for a someone younger to take on that responsibility.

While catching their breaths after the hustle of fair week, SEMO District Fair officials are preparing to embark on a new project: construction of a State Conservation Commission building in Arena Park.

Patrolman Jack V. Crittendon of the Cape Girardeau Police Department has turned in his resignation; Crittendon joined the force April 1, 1961; that was shortly after his brother, Don Crittendon, had been fatally wounded while serving as a police officer; Jack Crittendon has secured a position on the Little Rock, Arkansas, police force.

1939

The Rev. A.B. Cooper, pastor of the Baptist Church at Charleston, Missouri, has accepted the position of executive secretary to the Southeast Missouri Baptist Association; he will remain in the service of his congregation at least another month.

A black delegation headed by the Rev. L.F. Greene, called on the school board last night to again ask if a motor bus route to serve black children from the Smelterville and Marble City Heights sectors might be arranged; the board might be able to provide a bus, if enough children would ride it.

1914

That crowd at the fair yesterday set a record, at least for the last four years; George S. Summers, fair treasurer, says that more money was taken in at the gates than on any day in the four years he has held office.

That genial driver of fast race horses, Tilman Anderson, formerly of Commerce, Missouri, is now piloting a group of horse buyers for the French government around the country, trying to get 1,000 head of first-class cavalry mounts every week.
