Two area residents are reported to be recovering "right on schedule" following open heart surgery Monday and yesterday at Southeast Missouri Hospital; Monday's operation marked the first time open heart surgery was performed in Cape Girardeau.
A fire caused structural damage to a bathroom and smoke damage to adjacent rooms at West Lane Elementary School in Jackson last night; Fire Chief Gary Niswonger says the fire is of suspicious origin, but no cause has been determined.
Russell L. Dearmont, president of the Missouri-Pacific Railroad, a past student and past member of the State College Board of Regents, was the main orator yesterday for Masonic ceremonies which dedicated four new structures on the campus; the ceremonies were conducted at the entrance of Dearmont Quadrangle, named for Dearmont's father, the late W.S. Dearmont, who was president of the college from 1899 to 1921; cornerstones for the quadrangle and for a new science building, women's physical education building and practical arts (music) building were arrayed in front of the platform for the ceremony by the Masonic order.
All but five miles on the Charleston, Mo., end of Interstate 57, being paved and shouldered by R.B. Potashnick Construction Co., has been completed; the highway is being finished and cleaned up where it crosses Highway 61 south of Sikeston, Mo.

Cape Girardeau kicks off a grand fall celebration with a parade seen by thousands in the town's business section; continuing festivities in the evening is a pageant depicting the contribution of churches in Cape Girardeau's development; tomorrow's featured activity will be the anniversary dinner marking the 30th birthday of The Southeast Missourian.
