Bishop Bernard Law of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Catholic Diocese has appointed Sister Helen Brewer, D.C., of Springfield, Mo., as a member of the Education Department of the Missouri Catholic Conference.

Second Baptist Church congregation celebrates the second anniversary of its pastor, the Rev. Claude Russell Jr.; the guest church is the New Zion Baptist Church of Carbondale, Ill., and guest speaker is the Rev. P. Frazier of New Zion Baptist.

50 years ago: Oct. 3, 1956

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Two Tennessee men are killed early in the morning when the small single-engine airplane in which they are flying plummets into a field 11 miles south of here after a wing falls off in mid-air; the two were en route to Memphis from Champaign, Ill.

Cape Girardeau, for the sixth consecutive year, is maintaining a rating of better than 90 percent on the sanitary standards of its milk shed, receiving again an approved rating from the U.S. Public Health Service and the Missouri Division of Health.

75 years ago: Oct. 3, 1931

J.E. Hahn, 52, a farmer near Arbor, sustains a broken collarbone when he is knocked from his wagon by the tongue of another wagon that he is pulling behind the vehicle he is driving; the fracture is reduced by Dr. G.B. Schulz at Cape Girardeau, and Hahn returns home.

A permit is issued by the Cape Girardeau city engineer for construction of a one-story brick store building at the northwest corner of North Main and Mill streets; the building will be owned by Hirsch Bros., and will house a modern grocery store; it will take the place of a frame structure that has been razed.

100 years ago: Oct. 3, 1906

After sitting by for several days to see if city authorities would take a hand in squelching a disorderly house on Main Street, which flagrantly violated ordinances protecting the morals of the youth of the town, Prosecuting Attorney Charley Daues takes the matter himself in order to preserve a semblance of decency on the most prominent street in Cape Girardeau; one woman is arrested and warrants for several others are issued.

Billy Allen, manager of the Louisiana Carnival Co., which will show in Cape Girardeau next week, has relatives in this county, coming from here himself.
