Dr. W.T. Holland, pastor of First Baptist Church, delivers the welcoming address in the morning to about 1,500 delegates and visitors to the Missouri Baptist Convention's annual session being held here.

Two Cape Girardeau service station operators lodged an objection with the city council yesterday to what they described as "paying tax on tax"; Jim Yarbro and Fred W. Blattel told the council their gross receipts, upon which they pay a city tax, include 9 cents per gallon in state and federal gasoline taxes.

Ben H. Landis, operator of roller-skating rinks in Marion and Benton, Ill., has leased the Avalon dance pavilion on U.S. 61, just west of the city, from Joe Moore, the owner; he will operate it through the winter as a roller-skating rink; a new hardwood floor has been installed.

Palmer Hahn of Egypt Mills, the first graduate from the Midwest Trade Schools, 208 Independence St., goes to work as a welder for the Erlbacher Foundry & Machine Shop; the local school, one of a chain in the Midwest, was established in early September.

1913

BENTON, Mo. -- A grand jury was sworn in yesterday at Benton, chief among its charges being to investigate the selling of cigarettes to minors in Scott County; members of the jury are S.S. Grant, Whit Moody, C.I. Anderson, Harris Rodgers, Ben Berns, Wilson Bryeans, Louis Dohogne, W.T. Shanks, A.W. Wylie, Frank Bice, C.A. Jones and A. Baudendistel.

The Cape Girardeau City Council approved the first reading of the revised water and light ordinance; president W.S. Dearmont of the Normal School is present for the reading and breaks in only once with an objection.
