City of Cape Girardeau next week will embark upon construction of $35 million flood-control project that's expected to reduce by 70 percent damages from 100-year flood; ground-breaking ceremony for Cape LaCroix Creek-Walker Branch flood-control project will be held Monday at intersection of Commercial Street and Bloomfield Road.
U.S. Sen. Christopher Bond says he will endorse House-passed version of new federal highway bill and will try to build support for measure in Senate; Missouri Department of Economic Development figures show that highway spending at House level will produce more than $4 billion in spin-off economic impact in Missouri in addition to $2.7 billion in direct federal funding over next six years.

Arthur C. Lorimier, 67, of St. Louis, direct descendant of Don Louis Lorimier, founder of Cape Girardeau, dies at St. Louis hospital following operation; body will be brought to Cape Girardeau tomorrow for burial; Lorimier was born in St. Louis, Oct. 22, 1884, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clem Lorimier of Cape Girardeau and grandson five times removed of Don Louis Lorimier.
New furnace, replacing one which overheated and warped last week, is placed in operation at John S. Cobb School; furnace was obtained Saturday; it operates on low pressure type boiler that requires only periodic checks; new controls have also been obtained to operate heating system.
75 years ago: Oct. 29, 1926
Construction of Chester-Cairo Illinois state highway, which will pass near McClure and east end of Cape Girardeau bridge, will be started as one of first projects under $100,000,000 Illinois bond issue, which is soon to be released.
Despite vigorous campaigns waged by both parties, which brought some nationally-known figures to county, regular off-year election next Tuesday appears to have failed to attract more than passing interest among greater part of voters in county.
