25 years ago: Oct. 28, 1984

Britt Airways is now serving its flight out of and into Cape Girardeau with a change in aircraft; it is now using twin-engine Metroliner aircraft, which seats 18 passengers; until about a week ago, the airline had used 13-passenger Beechcraft 99 aircraft.

Tempers flare and charges and denials come fast and furious between the candidates for county coroner at a forum at the University Center; vying for the post are Republican Richard Robinson and Democratic incumbent Harold Cobb.

50 years ago: Oct. 28, 1959

Preparations for an industrial campaign for $300,000 on the local level without the help of an outside fundraising organization are advanced by the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce; funds raised will be used to acquire land for industrial development, for an industrial engineer and for other costs involved in such a project.

A two-story frame residence is being moved from a site on South West End Boulevard opposite Sunny Hill restaurant, where Farmers & Merchants Bank soon will erect a walk-up, drive-in facility for limited bank service; the house will be moved to Merriwether Street.

75 years ago: Oct. 28, 1934

Dr. H.H. McGinty, who arrived with his wife, two daughters and son from Lawrenceburg, Ky., yesterday, assumes his duties as pastor of First Baptist Church; he succeeds the Rev. E.D. Owen, who resigned two months ago.

The State Highway Department is considering the installation of electric traffic signals at the intersection of U.S. 61 and Highway 74; the great amount of traffic there, and several automobile accidents, have led to a survey by highway engineers to determine if signals are necessary.

100 years ago: Oct. 28, 1909

Workers are putting down new walks on Fountain Street and are increasing the width of the walks already down near the new Federal Building; new iron fence railings are also being installed, extending from the building on either side of the granite steps on the Fountain Street side of the building.

Theodore Bauerle and Christ Hirsch have bought out G.A. Richards, and the new firm will continue to provide high-class entertainment at the Gem Theater in Haarig.
