Voters will be deciding one issue on election day which will have definite impact on approximately 260 students in Nell Holcomb School District; district, which is in midst of severe financial difficulties, is asking voters to approve 60-cent tax increase per $100 assessed valuation; already thousands of dollars in debt this year, district will face major cutbacks next year if levy doesn't pass.
Cape Girardeau Cable TV will ask city council in November for authority to offer Home Box Office as option to subscribers who pay additional $9.85 per month; installation fee would be $25; cable service alone will be $5.88 plus $10 installation.
50 years ago: Oct. 28, 1953
Tentative boundaries, subject to change at future meetings, were worked out last night by Cape Girardeau County Board of Education for new school reorganization plan which may be submitted to voters in spring; under plan, county would be divided into four high school districts and two elementary districts; high school districts would be Delta, Oak Ridge, Jackson and Cape Girardeau.
Southeast Missouri's crop harvest, while far from ideal, has turned out better than most people expected; district's county agents, in Cape Girardeau yesterday for drought relief meeting, were cautious in estimating yields per acre, but agreed cotton and wheat had turned out well, despite lack of rain.
75 years ago: Oct. 28, 1928
After electing new officers to serve for coming year and tentatively selecting Joplin as place for next meeting, delegates to annual convention of Independent Order of B'Nai B'rith close their one-day meeting in evening at Hotel Idan-Ha with banquet; Henry M. Fredkin of Sedalia was elected president of order and Louis Hecht of Cape Girardeau vice president.
More than half of money necessary for purchase of lot for construction of new Sunday school building for First Presbyterian Church has been donated; it is believed that remainder of amount will be raised within a short time.
