Athletics, administration and drivers education are among the items a special committee of the Cape Girardeau School Board is suggesting the district cuts; in addition to beginning a list of suggested cuts when it met last night, it agreed that about $160,000 in cuts must be made for the next school year.

Cape Girardeau Fire Department Fire Training officer David Suttles has been appointed to the Missouri Fire Safety Advisory Board by Gov. John Ashcroft.

1962

R.S. Cunningham II, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Cunningham of Cape Girardeau, has been commissioned an ensign in the Navy; after attending a three-month Officers Candidate School in Bridgeport, R.I., he will return to general duties; Cunningham has spent 10 years in the service as an enlisted man, attaining the rank of Hospitalman First Class.

A local contractor -- Steinhoff, Kirkwood and Joiner -- has been awarded a bridge-building contract by the State Highway Commission; the bridge, a $27,675 job, will be installed over Little River Ditch 15 on Route EE in Cape Girardeau County, two miles southeast of Delta.

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- A proposal to issue $10,000 in bonds to pay a part of the cost of constructing a new elementary school building in Marble Hill failed in a special election here yesterday; the vote was 86 for the issue and 61 against.

The city engineer issues a permit to contractor Otto Deimund to build a dwelling for Mr. and Mrs. William Wescoat on Perry Avenue; the house will be immediately north of one now being built for Dr. W.H. Wescoat, father of William Wescoat.

The first Sunday night show to be given in Cape Girardeau for a long time is presented at the Grand Theater and is a good one; it was thought by some that the city authorities would object to the show, as an ordinance forbids any shows on Sunday night; but apparently no objections were raised.

David E. Hoch returns from Current River, where he has been for the past month helping his father catch fish.
