A volunteer program designed to keep victims of violent crimes informed on their cases as they move through the judicial process is being formed in Cape Girardeau; volunteers will serve as liaisons between victims of violent crime, the police and the courts; the program will be known as Victims of Crime Organization.

Rep. Bill Emerson, R-10th District, spent more than four times as much money as his Democratic challenger, Jerry Ford, between Jan. 1 and Oct. 13; Emerson spent $324,146 during that period, while Ford spent $76,858, according to campaign finance statements.

50 years ago: Oct. 27, 1957

LUTESVILLE, Mo. -- Burglars, who unsuccessfully batter a safe, flee with merchandise valued at between $400 and $500 from the Gamble store here; William Choate, who operates the store with his brother, Lindy Choate, discovers the break-in in the morning.

Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Wilkening of Cape Girardeau have learned that their son, Dr. Ralph L. Wilkening of Bakersfield, Calif., has been received into the American College of Surgeons; he is also a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

75 years ago: Oct. 27, 1932

Formation of an organization to promote retail business is announced; the Broadway Merchants Association has 21 members and will promote "Cape Girardeau as a whole and particularly the business of Broadway."

Plans for securing a tract of land which would be converted into a permanent horse show and possibly a fairground were discussed at a meeting last night of members of the 1932 Cape Girardeau Horse Show board; the men have obtained an option on 40 acres of land on what is known as the Beaudean tract off South Boulevard and hope to purchase the land.

100 years ago: Oct. 27, 1907

The Rev. August Bueltemann, formerly a resident of Cape Girardeau, preaches in the morning and evening at the German Methodist Church on South Sprigg Street; he now resides in Mount Olive, Ill.

In the evening, the Rev. W.G. Reeves of St. Louis speaks at the Baptist Church on "Is the World Growing Better or Worse?"
