25 years ago: Oct. 27, 1981

Southeast Missouri State University cleared an important hurdle yesterday in the path leading to the 1982-1983 fiscal year when the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education approved a $19.1 million appropriation recommendation made earlier this month by the board's fiscal affairs committee.

Five places on the board of directors for the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce went to men on the ballot, despite an opposition slate of five Cape Girardeau women; three-year terms on the 18-member board went to Cliff Rudesill, retail; Pete Poe, service; Jack Stanley, industrial, and Bill Back and Kenneth Hayden, at-large.

50 years ago: Oct. 27, 1956

A budget asking an increase of 51.9 percent in state-appropriated funds -- distinguished from local funds and earnings -- has been asked by State College for the 1957-1959 biennium; the college's request for $2,212,742 from general revenue, as compared with an appropriation of $1,459,000 for the biennium which ends June 30, 1957, has been submitted to the governor and the General Assembly.

An expansion and remodeling program that will give the store a bright, modern interior 20 percent larger than its present size has been started at the Buckner-Ragsdale Co. store in Cape Girardeau; the expansion will add the next door location on the south to the present store.

75 years ago: Oct. 27, 1931

Work of clearing weeds and other material from the triangular plot off Highway 61 and West Broadway begins, with other action to be taken at once to put the place in condition for planting shrubbery there; the ground extends from near the west city limits of Cape Girardeau to and beyond the Alvarado.

There is a slight scarcity of cotton pickers in some points in Southeast Missouri; additional men are desired in New Madrid County and others, because of the abundant cotton crop.

100 years ago: Oct. 27, 1906

A small crowd of less than 300 people turn out for the Normal School-Washington University football game; the two teams battle to a scoreless tie.

The convention of the Epworth League of the German Methodist Church of Southeast Missouri got underway yesterday and continues today; in all, there are about 50 delegates in Cape Girardeau.
