50 years ago: Oct. 26, 1961

The Golden Eagles Marching Band at State College will leave early Sunday for St. Louis, where they will perform during the Cardinals-Cleveland Browns football game that afternoon; the half time show will be televised locally over KFVS-TV.

The old problem of changing a dollar bill has been solved; a new machine -- the first of its kind here -- has been installed at Norge Dry Cleaning Village, 618 Morgan Oak, which changes dollar bills for silver coins.

75 years ago: Oct. 26, 1936

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Fanned by a brisk north wind, fire roars through one of the largest business buildings in Chaffee, causing damage estimated at $9,500; other buildings nearby are threatened, but Chaffee and Cape Girardeau firemen hold the blaze to the Stubbs & Stubbs hardware store on the north side of Yoakum Avenue.

The Cape Girardeau Garden Club has asked the city for a public plot where it might plant a rose garden; it was suggested that the stretch along the south side of Old Lorimier Cemetery, overlooking North Street, might be used.

100 years ago: Oct. 26, 1911

Charles Stehr and George Waters leave in the afternoon for the lower counties to spend several days hunting ducks.

J.S. Dutton, district manager for the Missouri Life and Accident Insurance Co., has moved his residence and office to 234 Broadway.
