Crowe crashes onto the shoulder of northbound Interstate 55, three-quarters of a mile north of Scott City in the morning, minutes after it becomes airborne for the first time; the test pilot flying the plane, James L. Daniel of Tulsa, Okla., is killed in the crash.

KANSAS CITY, MO. -- Kansas City, coming back when it seems impossible, scores two runs in the ninth inning on a one-out pinch single by Dane Iorg to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 and force a deciding seventh game in the World Series.

50 years ago: Oct. 26, 1960

The resignation of Ross Lloyd Crigler, public librarian, and the appointment of Mary Kempe to that post is announced by R.E.L. Lamkin Jr., chairman of the Cape Girardeau Public Library Board; Crigler has been librarian here 18 years.

Cape Girardeau County, with sales tax returns submitted from 824 retail outlets -- one less than at the corresponding time a year ago -- had the largest third-quarter volume of business in its history in the three months ending Sept. 30; retailers did $9,291,186 worth of business in the three-month period.

75 years ago: Oct. 26, 1935

A crowd expected to tax the capacity of State College auditorium will hear Robert Fechner, head of the Civilian Conservation Corps, in an address Monday afternoon; later in the evening, he will be the guest of honor at a dinner at the Community Clubhouse.

Caught in a sprocket wheel at the Buchheit and Unterreiner mill near Uniontown, Mo., Joseph Buchheit's clothes are torn off, and he sustains cuts and bruises before he manages to get loose.

100 years ago: Oct. 26, 1910

A year ago today, President Taft visited this river town, planting a sturdy young elm tree on the Normal School campus; the young sapling took root instantly and has thrived ever since.

After several weeks' absence, it will be good for the merchants of Broadway to see the farmers' teams driving along their street and stopping at their stores; the paving of that thoroughfare is one of the best things that has ever happened to Cape Girardeau.
