Broadway, a portion of which has been one-way for the past six years, could once again accommodate two-way traffic by the end of the year, thanks to action taken by the Cape Girardeau City Council last night; the council unanimously approved a motion to re-establish two-way traffic on Broadway between Pacific and Lorimier streets.

At a special meeting late yesterday afternoon, the Cape Girardeau City Council gave a 5-2 preliminary approval to an ordinance designed to repeal the city's abortion ordinance, which was passed by a 4-3 margin barely a month ago.

50 years ago: Oct. 26, 1957

The Coney Island Cafe, 513 Broadway, originally built and operated for a number of years by the late Jimmie Laskaris, has reopened for business under the management of his wife, Rose Laskaris, and Nellie Clippard.

The temperature last night dipped down to a chilly 33 degrees in Cape Girardeau, the coldest of the season; colder weather is forecast for tonight in Southeast Missouri, with freezing temperatures predicted for part or all of the district.

75 years ago: Oct. 26, 1932

Speaking last night at Common Pleas Courthouse, Joseph Kane of St. Louis, Democratic nominee for judge of the St. Louis Court of Appeals, assailed Republicans and called for a "new deal" in governmental administration.

Cape Girardeau is to be on the Mississippi Highway, connecting Port Arthur, Canada, with New Orleans, according to plans outlined at a meeting of the National Association of Commercial Organization Secretaries in Memphis, Tenn.; the route will follow the west side of the Mississippi River.

100 years ago: Oct. 26, 1907

Although it was expected that there might be some little scurry of depositors to withdraw their funds from the German-American Bank after yesterday's excitement, the run fails to develop; instead, there is a movement of money into the bank as depositors know the bank is now a part of the Southeast Missouri Trust Co.

Several hunters are out on the river in the morning killing mud hens; Bob Brinkopf is lucky to the extent of about 15 in a short time.
