St. Andrew Lutheran Church celebrates its 30th anniversary with three major milestones; the congregation cuts the ribbon on a new addition that provides more office space, a meeting room and several classrooms; at the same time, a mortgage burning is held to recognize the fact that the debt on the worship center has been paid off; the final milestone is a cornerstone laying on a new activity center.

Keiki McBride was crowned Central High School's 1987 Homecoming queen last night; her escort was Rhett Pierce; both are seniors.

Reflecting concerns with the Cuban missile crisis, all recruiting offices in Cape Girardeau, with the exception of the Army, report there has been a definite increase in the number of people coming in or calling to inquire about enlisting in the armed services.

Excavation for a new Teamsters union building on Broadview Street is expected to begin soon; the building will house meeting rooms, office space and banquet facilities for the Teamsters and Chauffeurs Local 574, which has about 1,200 members.

Impressed by the pageant, "Horace Mann -- Torchbearer" at the meeting of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association last week, Roscoe V. Cramer, head of the state association, asks that it be presented at the state convention in St. Louis; the pageant, which depicts the life of Mann, founder of the public school system, has a cast of about 200.

Featuring the revival of the old-time parade, the Cole Bros. Circus is in Cape Girardeau; the show arrived yesterday, unloading from the Frisco tracks on Water Street, and then parading to Fairground Park; missing from the marchers was Clyde Beatty and Ken Maynard, headliners for the show; it is explained, they never parade.

The 37th-annual meeting of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association convened last night at Academic Hall and continues today; a reception for the delegates is held in the evening.

Martin Krueger, the hardware merchant and farmer, will have an expert dynamite on his farm, just outside the city limits, Nov. 15 to demonstrate the use of explosives in preparing the soil for cultivation.
