ROLLA, Mo. -- The two candidates for Congress in the 8th District reiterate their views on economic development for the district and foreign and domestic policy in a debate here, sponsored by a local radio station; it is the second of three scheduled debates pitting Democrat Bill Blue against Republican incumbent Bill Emerson.

50 years ago: Oct. 24, 1959

The name of Leo L. Schade, publisher of the Cape County Post in Jackson, has been submitted to officials in Washington, D.C., for the position of temporary postmaster of Jackson; if approved, Schade will succeed J. Ryland Short as postmaster.

A jagged east to west line defining boundaries of St. Vincent's and St. Mary's parishes of the Catholic church has been established by the Most Rev. Charles H. Helmsing, bishop of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese; establishment of definite areas for each of the parishes marks the first time in their almost 90 year of co-existence that they have been allocated specific geographical territory.

75 years ago: Oct. 24, 1934

MIAMI, Fla. -- The Cape Girardeau Drum & Bugle Corps -- Missouri's Golden Troopers -- finish 12th in the national contests at the American Legion convention; the 10 highest units will compete this evening for the national championship; last year, the Cape Girardeau group placed 38th in the nationals.

Cape Girardeau deer hunters depart for various points in the Ozarks to establish camps, locate deer runs and get ready for the opening of the three-day season tomorrow.

100 years ago: Oct. 24, 1909

The Right Rev. Daniel S. Tuttle, Episcopal bishop of Missouri, is in Cape Girardeau and preaches at both the morning and evening services at Christ Episcopal Church.

Professor Cockefair, who has charge of agriculture work at the Normals School, is going to raise chickens as soon as the tennis tournament closes; he is having excavations made in a hillside in the northwest part of the campus preparatory to starting the construction of a chicken house with concrete walls set into the side of the hill; the chickens will be hatched and raised there according to the very best scientific principles.
