Ozark Air Lines flights are expected to resume in Cape Girardeau on a limited basis as early as next week, after the 39-day strike by flight attendants was settled last night; it may take several more weeks before former passengers to and from Cape Girardeau become reconditioned to using the air carrier.
The Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority has accepted the resignation of commissioner Robert J. Earley, representing Cape Girardeau County, and has asked the Cape Girardeau County Court to appoint someone to fill the remaining two years of his term.
50 years ago: Oct. 24, 1954
The Rev. James S. Saracini, member of the faculty at St. Vincent's College and chaplain of Saint Francis Hospital, observes his 25th anniversary in the priesthood with a special Mass at Old St. Vincent's Church and a reception afterward at the Knights of Columbus Hall; Saracini was born in Muro Lucano, Italy, but settled in Poplar Bluff, Mo., with his parents when a child.
NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Floyd C. Shoemaker, secretary of the Missouri State Historical Society, makes the principal address at the unveiling of a historical marker for the founding of New Madrid in 1789; his topic is "New Madrid, Mother of Southeast Missouri."
75 years ago: Oct. 24, 1929
NEW YORK -- The most terrifying panic of selling since the war scare of 1914 deals a crushing blow to the leading stock markets throughout the country and is checked only by prompt assurances from America's leading bankers; all records for wild and frenzied trading are broken.
Enrollment begins at Teachers College for the vanguard of teachers from the district arriving to attend the annual meeting of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Association, which will convene this evening.
100 years ago: Oct. 24, 1904
Incorporation papers are received from Jefferson City by the merchants who organized the new Roth Tobacco Co.; ground will be broken at once for the new factory, which will be located at the southeast corner of Merriwether and Frederick streets.
Work begins on improving Louisiana Avenue, which will make it one of the finest in the city.
